ATTACHMENT-BASED PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY: WHO MAY BENEFIT?

In particular I work with individuals who have experienced difficulties early on in life - perhaps depression or addiction in the family, the turmoil of disrupted attachments, illness or bereavement, the trauma of cruelty and abuse, or the effects of social upheaval. These kinds of experiences affect the way we grow up, the relationships we make with others, the way we feel about ourselves. The impact of childhood events often casts a deep shadow over us in adult life.

THE AIMS OF ATTACHMENT-BASED PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY.

  • a deeper understanding of oneself
  • less critical, punishing or destructive relationship with oneself
  • a better understanding of other people
  • improved ability to make and maintain relationships with others
  • greater pleasure in achievements, work and creativity
  • better strategies for coping with anxiety and stress
  • feeling less burdoned or weighed down, more spontaneous.

    WHAT HAPPENS IN PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY?

You are invited to talk about all aspects of yourself - your past experiences, current relationships, future ambitions, emotional life, values and beliefs. I am interested in patients’ dreams and creative pursuits. The relationship which develops also becomes an important part of the therapy. My aim is to provide a safe, supportive environment which may also be lively and challenging if needed.

Sessions last for 50 minutes and are arranged once, twice or three times a week. Psychoanalytic therapy may continue for months or several years, depending on individual needs. Most patients have experienced difficulties for many years and they value a long-term approach.

    PRACTICAL MATTERS.

Patients may lie on a couch during sessions or sit face-to-face. My consulting room is private and quiet. Unfortunately, due to a flight of steps down to the door, it is not accessible to those with very restricted mobility. Generally I recommend turning off mobile devices during sessions - most people are relieved to be free of such intrusions for an hour or so to have space for their own thoughts and feelings.

Fees are 60 - 70 per session in Stoke Newington and 75 per session in the West End. Psychotherapy patients who have two or more appointments each week may discuss a lower sessional fee, and I can offer some reduced fees for those on low incomes. An invoice is provided at the end of each month - please be aware that missed or cancelled sessions are charged for under most circumstances.

  • PLEASE NOTE: I AM CURRENTLY ON SABBATICAL UNTIL JANUARY 2019
